b98f4b4034 Ignore RUSTSEC-2026-0206 (rustybuzz unmaintained) in cargo-deny (#8334)
## Summary

- [x] I have followed the instructions in the PR template

Fixes the 12 failing `cargo-deny` CI checks on `main` (introduced by
#8289).

### Root cause

`rustybuzz` was flagged as unmaintained by
[RUSTSEC-2026-0206](https://rustsec.org/advisories/RUSTSEC-2026-0206),
reported on 2026-07-12 — after the previous cargo-deny fix (#8300) was
merged on 2026-07-07. The advisory fires on all 12 cargo-deny target
triples.

`rustybuzz` is pulled in transitively via `resvg` → `usvg`, which
`egui_extras` uses for SVG support.

### Why ignore (not fix)?

- `resvg` is pinned at `0.45.1` and cannot be bumped: `0.47` needs
`tiny-skia 0.12`, but `winit 0.30`'s `sctk-adwaita` is stuck on
`tiny-skia 0.11` (see comment in `Cargo.toml` line 128).
- The advisory's recommended replacement is
[`harfrust`](https://github.com/harfbuzz/harfrust), which `resvg` has
not adopted yet.
- This is the same pattern used for the other transitively-unmaintained
advisories already in the ignore list (`ttf-parser` via winit,
`quick-xml` via accesskit/wayland, `bincode`, `yaml-rust`).

### Change

Added `RUSTSEC-2026-0206` to the `[advisories] ignore` list in
`deny.toml` with an explanatory comment.

## Test plan

- [x] `cargo deny check advisories` — passes (`advisories ok`)
- [x] `cargo deny check` — all sections pass (`advisories ok, bans ok,
licenses ok, sources ok`)

d3850a9ca7 Update crates (#8301)
Semver-compatible dependency updates (~200 transitive crates in
`Cargo.lock`), plus housekeeping of the version pins in `Cargo.toml`.

## Changes
* Normalize version strings in `[workspace.dependencies]`
(`similar-asserts = "2.0"`, `unicode_names2 = "3.1"`)
* `cargo update`: bump all semver-compatible transitive dependencies
* `itertools` 0.14 → 0.15; the duplicate with puffin's 0.14 /
criterion's 0.13 is now allowed in `deny.toml`
* `rand_core` duplicate (0.6 via phf_generator's rand 0.8, 0.10 via
getrandom 0.4/chacha20) also allowed in `deny.toml` — rand ecosystem is
mid-migration
* `toml` lock moved to 1.1.2 — the old winnow-duplicate blocker is gone
(winit's `toml_edit` now uses winnow 1.x), so the stale comment is
removed
* `wgpu` got a lock-only patch bump 29.0.1 → 29.0.4 (still on the 29.x
line; wgpu 30 intentionally not taken)

## Held back (would fail `cargo deny` with duplicate crates)
* `env_logger` 0.11.8 — newer pulls env_filter 1.x, duplicating the
0.1.x that android_logger needs
* `image` 0.25.6 — needs png 0.18, blocked on resvg
* `smithay-clipboard` 0.7.2 — pulls calloop 0.14, duplicating winit's
0.13
* accesskit platform adapters — newer ones need accesskit_consumer
0.36/0.37, duplicating the 0.35 that kittest 0.4 pins (comments added
for `accesskit_consumer`/`accesskit_winit`)
* wasm-bindgen family kept at 0.2.108 per the sync comment

Majors still blocked (documented in `Cargo.toml`):
`font-types`/`skrifa`/`harfrust` (vello_cpu 0.0.9), `resvg` (winit
0.30).

Verified: `scripts/cargo_deny.sh` green on all targets, `cargo clippy
--all-features --all-targets` clean.

5031c47cb2 Update accesskit to 0.24.0 (and related deps) (#7850)
this patch updates our deps to [accesskit
0.24.0](https://docs.rs/accesskit/0.24.0/accesskit/) (was
[0.21.1](https://docs.rs/accesskit/0.21.1/accesskit/)),
[accesskit_consumer
0.35.0](https://docs.rs/accesskit_consumer/0.35.0/accesskit_consumer/)
(was
[0.30.1](https://docs.rs/accesskit_consumer/0.30.1/accesskit_consumer/)),
and [accesskit_winit
0.32.0](https://docs.rs/accesskit_winit/0.32.0/accesskit_winit/) (was
[0.29.1](https://docs.rs/accesskit_winit/0.29.1/accesskit_winit/)),
allowing egui to be used in apps that use accessibility subtrees
(AccessKit/accesskit#655).

for now, we handle the subtree-related breaking changes by assuming that
egui will use [the root
tree](https://docs.rs/accesskit/0.24.0/accesskit/struct.TreeId.html#associatedconstant.ROOT),
which is good enough for [servoshell](https://github.com/servo/servo)
and does not require any API changes.

A number of separate commits to possibly easily revert some of them.

General idea: selectively update dependencies to remove transitive
dependencies and multiple versions etc. As well as updating "major" (the
one that `cargo update` doesn't update) version for some in Cargo.toml.

Rendering pipelines in `vello_cpu` wasn't obvious. Now both are used.

I'll probably come back to this and clean it up a bit. This PR
reimplements ab_glyph's functionality on top of Skrifa, a somewhat
lower-level font API that's being used in Chrome now.

Skrifa doesn't perform rasterization itself, so I'm using
[vello_cpu](https://github.com/linebender/vello) from the Linebender
project for rasterization. It's still in its early days, but I believe
it's already quite fast. It also supports color and gradient fills, so
color emoji support will be easier.

Skrifa also supports font hinting, which should make text look a bit
nicer / less blurry.

Here's the current ab_glyph rendering:

<img width="1592" height="1068" alt="image"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/2385b66e-23f8-4c6e-b8c2-ea90e0eea4e4"
/>

Here's Skrifa *without* hinting--it looks almost identical, but there
are some subpixel differences, probably due to rasterizer behavior:

<img width="1592" height="1068" alt="image"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/a815f3e9-65ac-4940-bc00-571177bef53d"
/>

Here's Skrifa  *with* hinting:

<img width="1592" height="1068" alt="image"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/d6cc0669-3537-4377-bba9-ed5ef09664db"
/>

Hinting does make the horizontal strokes look a bit bolder, which makes
me wonder once again about increasing the font weight from "light" to
"regular".

2024295f78 Make ImageLoader use background thread (#5394)
This is the same change as in #4069 but as this is stale I wanted to
reopen a non stale PR

Modifies ImageLoader's load function to use background threads for the

especially noticeable when loading many images at once.

This was modelled after the other loader implementations that also use
threads.

70a01138b7 Add egui testing library (#5166)
- closes #3491
- closes #3926

This adds a testing library to egui based on
[kittest](https://github.com/rerun-io/kittest). Kittest is a new
[AccessKit](https://github.com/AccessKit/accesskit/)-based testing
library. The api is inspired by the js
[testing-library](https://testing-library.com/) where the idea is also
to query the dom based on accessibility attributes.
We made kittest with egui in mind but it should work with any rust gui
framework with AccessKit support.

It currently has support for:
- running the egui app, frame by frame
- building the AccessKit tree
- ergonomic queries via kittest
  - via e.g. get_by_name, get_by_role
- simulating events based on the accesskit node id
- creating arbitrary events based on Harness::input_mut
- rendering screenshots via wgpu
- snapshot tests with these screenshots

A simple test looks like this:
```rust
fn main() {
    let mut checked = false;
    let app = |ctx: &Context| {
        CentralPanel::default().show(ctx, |ui| {
            ui.checkbox(&mut checked, "Check me!");
        });
    };
    let mut harness = Harness::builder().with_size(egui::Vec2::new(200.0, 100.0)).build(app);
    let checkbox = harness.get_by_name("Check me!");
    assert_eq!(checkbox.toggled(), Some(Toggled::False));
    checkbox.click();
    harness.run();
    let checkbox = harness.get_by_name("Check me!");
    assert_eq!(checkbox.toggled(), Some(Toggled::True));
    // You can even render the ui and do image snapshot tests
    #[cfg(all(feature = "wgpu", feature = "snapshot"))]
    egui_kittest::image_snapshot(&egui_kittest::wgpu::TestRenderer::new().render(&harness), "readme_example");
}
```

~Since getting wgpu to run in ci is a hassle, I'm taking another shot at
creating a software renderer for egui (ideally without a huge dependency
like skia)~ (this didn't work as well as I hoped and it turns out in CI
you can just run tests on a mac runner which comes with a real GPU)

Here is a example of a failed snapshot test in ci, it will say which
snapshot failed and upload an artifact with the before / after and diff
images:

* Closes https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/1918
* Closes https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/4437
* Closes https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/4709
* [x] I have followed the instructions in the PR template

Hiya,

I need new winit for a specific fix for a android_native_actvity. There
are already two PRs, but both don't seem to have a lot of movement, or
are entirely complete:

https://github.com/emilk/egui/pull/4466
Seems to have gone stale & is missing some bits.

https://github.com/emilk/egui/pull/4702
Also seems stale (if less so), and is missing a refactor to
run_on_demand. I also *think* the accesskit integration has a mistake
and can't be enabled. I've marked them as a co-author on this as I
started from this branch. (I think! Haven't done that on git before...).

Sorry for the wall of text but just dumping some details / thoughts
here:

- There's an issue with creating child windows in winit 0.30.1 and up on
macOS. The multiple_viewports, "create immediate viewport" example
crashes on anything later 0.30.1, with a stack overflow in unsafe code.
I've create [a winit
issue](https://github.com/rust-windowing/winit/issues/3800), it *might*
already be fixed in 0.31.0 but I can't test as 0.31 will likely require
another refactoring. For now I have just pinned things to 0.30.0 exatly.

- Winit has deprecated run_on_demand, instead requiring the
ApplicationHandler interface. In 0.31.0 run_on_demand is removed. I've
refactored both the integration and the WinitApp trait to follow this
pattern. I've left user_events a bit more opaque, as it seems 0.31.0 is
doing a rework of UserEvents too.

- I've used the new lazy init approach for access kit from this branch
https://github.com/mwcampbell/egui/tree/accesskit-new-lazy-init and
marked Matt as co-author, thanks Matt!

- There was very similair but not quite the same code for run_and_return
and run_and_exit. I've merged them, but looking at the github issues
graveyard it seems vey finnicky. I *hope* this is more robust than
before but it's a bit scary.

- when receiving new_events this also used to check the redraw timing
dictionary. That doesn't seem necesarry so left this out, but that is a
slight behaviour change?

- I have reeneabled serial_windows on macOS. I wondered whether it was
fixed after this PR and does seem to be! However, even before this PR it
seems to work, so maybe winit has sorted things out before that...
Windows also works fine now without the extra hack.

- I've done a very basic test of AccessKit on Windows and screen reader
seems ok but I'm really not knowleadgable enough to say whether it's all
good or not.

- I've tested cargo tests & all examples on Windows & macOS, and ran a
basic Android app. Still, testing native platforms is wel... hard so if
anyone can test linux / iOs / older mac versions / windows 10 would
probably be a good idea!

- For consistencys sake I've made all event like functions in WinitApp
return a `Result<EventResult>`. There's quite a bit of Ok-wrapping now,
maybe too annoying? Not sure.

Thank you for having a look!

49cb62b1ba Replace directories-next dependency with directories (#4661)
`directories-next` was created because `directories` was not maintained
at the time. However, `directories` has gotten active maintainership
since, and it has received more updates than `directories-next`.

`directories` also has more recent downloads than its `next`
counterpart, so it might make sense to switch to it, to avoid
unnecessary duplicate dependencies, where a project depends transitively
on both `directories` and `directories-next`.

The main question is whether we depend on any specific behavior from
`directories-next`.

14194f5d3a eframe: Use objc2 and its framework crates (#4395)
These are a replacement to the `objc` and `cocoa` crates.

This PR prevents:
- An extra copy when creating `NSData`
- A memory leak when creating `NSImage`
- A memory leak when creating `NSString`

And is generally a readability improvement.

Note that we define `NSApp` manually for now, the implementation in
`objc2-app-kit` is currently suboptimal and wouldn't allow you to check
whether the NSApplication has been created or not.

Related: https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/4219, this should nicely
coincide with the Winit `0.30` release.

963be247f2 Update resvg dependency of egui_extras (#3719)
Update `resvg` from v0.28 to v0.37.
Remove related, unnecessary entries from `deny.toml`.

⚠ In example `images` ferris is scaled differently, but I guess that now
it scales in expected way (takes all available space; before this PR it
takes up to space that, was available at first render- it does not
upscale).

This PR is minimal adaptation to new `resvg` api and small related
simplification, however it should be considered to update loaders
(currently if svg image initially was small and was scaled up it will be
blurred, see https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/3501). As svg image
now scales over render size, problem will be more often seen now.

(currently `SvgLoader` theoretically should rerender for different sizes
(but I guess it will result in memory leak in that case), but refreshing
is stopped earlier in `DefaultTextureLoader`).

I have initial version of loaders update, that will fix issue with svg
scaling (and also enable e.g. reloading image if file has been changed),
I will submit these changes in separate PR once this one is merged.

Closes <https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/3652>.

all looking normal

Updated minor ahash version because 0.8.1 got yanked. Added some deny
exceptions for now - we'll have to update winit soon to resolve glow
related cargo deny errors (not a big issue though since we don't expect
wgpu and glow backends to be used at the same time)
