# What it does
Addition of a new system of theme plugins which allow the user to use
different rules engine to compute the style for the available
specialised widget style.
# How to use
Create a engine implementing the trait `ThemePlugin` and `ThemeStyle<S:
StyleStruct>` and implement the necessary methods, then register this
way (example for `ButtonStyle`):
```ui.add_theme::<ButtonStyle>(&mycustomengine);```
Now all button will call the `ThemeStyle<ButtonStyle>` method to compute the correct style and later use the cached value to avoid the costly computation.
If no valid `ThemeStyle<S>` or engine is available then it fallback to the default style.
This PR avoids materializing the contents of a file that was dragged
into an egui application on the web. It does so by storing the
`web_sys::File` handle directly on WASM.
This breaks the existing API of `DroppedFile` on the web, because there
is no way to retrieve the bytes synchronously form a `DroppedFile`
anymore, forcing handling call sites to become asynchronous.
The native API remains the same.
Removes the `deadlock_detection` feature, since we now have a more
primitive panic-after-30s deadlock detection which works well enough and
even detects kinds of deadlocks that the `deadlock_detection` feature
never supported.
Today each widget does its own custom layout, which has some drawbacks:
- not very flexible
- you can add an `Image` to `Button` but it will always be shown on the
left side
- you can't add a `Image` to a e.g. a `SelectableLabel`
- a lot of duplicated code
This PR introduces `Atoms` and `AtomLayout` which abstracts over "widget
content" and layout within widgets, so it'd be possible to add images /
text / custom rendering (for e.g. the checkbox) to any widget.
A simple custom button implementation is now as easy as this:
```rs
pub struct ALButton<'a> {
al: AtomicLayout<'a>,
}
impl<'a> ALButton<'a> {
pub fn new(content: impl IntoAtomics) -> Self {
Self { al: content.into_atomics() }
}
}
impl<'a> Widget for ALButton<'a> {
fn ui(mut self, ui: &mut Ui) -> Response {
let response = ui.ctx().read_response(ui.next_auto_id());
let visuals = response.map_or(&ui.style().visuals.widgets.inactive, |response| {
ui.style().interact(&response)
});
self.al.frame = self
.al
.frame
.inner_margin(ui.style().spacing.button_padding)
.fill(visuals.bg_fill)
.stroke(visuals.bg_stroke)
.corner_radius(visuals.corner_radius);
self.al.show(ui)
}
}
```
The initial implementation only does very basic layout, just enough to
be able to implement most current egui widgets, so:
- only horizontal layout
- everything is centered
- a single item may grow/shrink based on the available space
- everything can be contained in a Frame
There is a trait `IntoAtoms` that conveniently allows you to construct
`Atoms` from a tuple
```
ui.button((Image::new("image.png"), "Click me!"))
```
to get a button with image and text.
This PR reimplements three egui widgets based on the new AtomLayout:
- Button
- matches the old button pixel-by-pixel
- Button with image is now [properly
aligned](https://github.com/emilk/egui/pull/5830/files#diff-962ce2c68ab50724b01c6b64c683c4067edd9b79fcdcb39a6071021e33ebe772)
in justified layouts
- selected button style now matches SelecatbleLabel look
- For some reason the DragValue text seems shifted by a pixel almost
everywhere, but I think it's more centered now, yay?
- Checkbox
- basically pixel-perfect but apparently the check mesh is very slightly
different so I had to update the snapshot
- somehow needs a bit more space in some snapshot tests?
- RadioButton
- pixel-perfect
- somehow needs a bit more space in some snapshot tests?
I plan on updating TextEdit based on AtomLayout in a separate PR (so
you could use it to add a icon within the textedit frame).
* [x] I have followed the instructions in the PR template
Previously, navigating text in `TextEdit` with Ctrl + left/right arrow
would jump inside words that contained combining characters (i.e.
diacritics). This PR introduces new dependency of `unicode-segmentation`
to handle grapheme encoding. The new implementation ignores whitespace
and other separators such as `-` (dash) between words, but respects `_`
(underscore).
Closes <https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/3862>.
Factoring the `bool` members of `Response` into a bitfield, the size of
`Response` is now 96 bytes (down from 104).
I gave `Sense` the same treatment, however this has no effects on
`Response` due to padding. I've decided not to pursue `PointerState`, as
it is quite large (_many_ members that are sized and aligned to
multiples of 8 bytes), so I don't expect any noticeable benefit from
making handful of `bool`s slightly leaner.
In any case, the changes to `Sense` are already quite a bit more
intrusive than those to `Response`.
The previous implementation overloaded the names of the attributes
`click` and `drag` with similarly named methods that _construct_ `Sense`
with the corresponding flag set. Now, that the attributes can no longer
be accessed directly, I had to introduce methods with new names
(`senses_click()`, `senses_drag()` and `is_focusable()`). I don't think
this is the cleanest solution: the old methods are essentially redundant
now that the named constants like `Sense::CLICK` exist. I did however
not want to needlessly break backwards compatibility.
I am happy to revert it (or go further 🙂) if there are concerns.
Hey! I am not sure if this is something that's been considered before
and decided against (I couldn't find any PR's or issues).
This change removes the internal profiling macros in library crates and
the `puffin` feature and replaces it with similar functions in the
[profiling](https://github.com/aclysma/profiling) crate. This crate
provides a layer of abstraction over various profiler instrumentation
crates and allows library users to pick their favorite (supported)
profiler.
An additional benefit for puffin users is that dependencies of egui are
included in the instrumentation output too (mainly wgpu which uses the
profiling crate), so more details might be available when profiling.
A breaking change is that instead of using the `puffin` feature on egui,
users that want to profile the crate with puffin instead have to enable
the `profile-with-puffin` feature on the profiling crate. Similarly they
could instead choose to use `profile-with-tracy` etc.
I tried to add a 'tracy' feature to egui_demo_app in order to showcase ,
however the /scripts/check.sh currently breaks on mutually exclusive
features (which this introduces), so I decided against including it for
the initial PR. I'm happy to iterate more on this if there is interest
in taking this PR though.
- fixes https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/5359
For the test I added a `Harness::press_key` function. We should
eventually add these to kittest, probably via a trait one can implement
for the `Harness` but for now this should do.
You can see this feature in action
[here](https://docs.rs/sysinfo/latest/src/sysinfo/common/system.rs.html#46)
or on any of dtolnay's crates and many others. I found myself going
through your project code recently on docs.rs and I was a bit sad I
couldn't have this feature enabled. This should fix it at next release.
Hiya,
I need new winit for a specific fix for a android_native_actvity. There
are already two PRs, but both don't seem to have a lot of movement, or
are entirely complete:
https://github.com/emilk/egui/pull/4466
Seems to have gone stale & is missing some bits.
https://github.com/emilk/egui/pull/4702
Also seems stale (if less so), and is missing a refactor to
run_on_demand. I also *think* the accesskit integration has a mistake
and can't be enabled. I've marked them as a co-author on this as I
started from this branch. (I think! Haven't done that on git before...).
Sorry for the wall of text but just dumping some details / thoughts
here:
- There's an issue with creating child windows in winit 0.30.1 and up on
macOS. The multiple_viewports, "create immediate viewport" example
crashes on anything later 0.30.1, with a stack overflow in unsafe code.
I've create [a winit
issue](https://github.com/rust-windowing/winit/issues/3800), it *might*
already be fixed in 0.31.0 but I can't test as 0.31 will likely require
another refactoring. For now I have just pinned things to 0.30.0 exatly.
- Winit has deprecated run_on_demand, instead requiring the
ApplicationHandler interface. In 0.31.0 run_on_demand is removed. I've
refactored both the integration and the WinitApp trait to follow this
pattern. I've left user_events a bit more opaque, as it seems 0.31.0 is
doing a rework of UserEvents too.
- I've used the new lazy init approach for access kit from this branch
https://github.com/mwcampbell/egui/tree/accesskit-new-lazy-init and
marked Matt as co-author, thanks Matt!
- There was very similair but not quite the same code for run_and_return
and run_and_exit. I've merged them, but looking at the github issues
graveyard it seems vey finnicky. I *hope* this is more robust than
before but it's a bit scary.
- when receiving new_events this also used to check the redraw timing
dictionary. That doesn't seem necesarry so left this out, but that is a
slight behaviour change?
- I have reeneabled serial_windows on macOS. I wondered whether it was
fixed after this PR and does seem to be! However, even before this PR it
seems to work, so maybe winit has sorted things out before that...
Windows also works fine now without the extra hack.
- I've done a very basic test of AccessKit on Windows and screen reader
seems ok but I'm really not knowleadgable enough to say whether it's all
good or not.
- I've tested cargo tests & all examples on Windows & macOS, and ran a
basic Android app. Still, testing native platforms is wel... hard so if
anyone can test linux / iOs / older mac versions / windows 10 would
probably be a good idea!
- For consistencys sake I've made all event like functions in WinitApp
return a `Result<EventResult>`. There's quite a bit of Ok-wrapping now,
maybe too annoying? Not sure.
Thank you for having a look!
Inspired by:
44d65f41ac/Cargo.toml (L65)
I took the liberty of removing that comment since I *think* that I got
all "relevant" ones (showing up more than once, sort of).
Removes `egui_assert` etc and replaces it with normal `debug_assert`
calls.
Previously you could opt-in to more runtime checks using feature flags.
Now these extra runtime checks are always enabled for debug builds.
You are most likely to encounter them if you use negative sizes or NaNs
or other similar bugs.
These usually indicate bugs in user space.
* Closes https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/3941
Workspace dependencies can be annoying.
If you don't set them to `default-features=false`, then you cannot opt
out of their default features anywhere else, and get warnings if you
try.
So you set `default-features=false`, and then you need to manually opt
in to the default features everywhere else.
Or, as in my case, don't.
I don't have the energy to do this tonight, so I'll just revert.
* Part of https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/1485
This adds a `rayon` feature to `epaint` and `egui` to parallelize
tessellation of large shapes, such as high-resolution plot lines.
Tested on M1 Mac:
* native
* webgl, firefox
* webgpu, chrome
all looking normal
Updated minor ahash version because 0.8.1 got yanked. Added some deny
exceptions for now - we'll have to update winit soon to resolve glow
related cargo deny errors (not a big issue though since we don't expect
wgpu and glow backends to be used at the same time)
* Update accesskit to 0.11
* Add instructions on how to test the web viewer to CONTRIBUTING.md
Also removed dependency on `jq`
Closes https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/2859
* Replace tracing crate with log
It's just so much simpler to use
* Add `bacon wasm` job
* eframe: add a WebLogger for piping log events to the web console
